The Sussex Phillumenist Society.
Whilst adopting all the well respected traditions of the numerous societies/clubs in existence today, The Sussex Phillumenist Society is unique in that initially, members can only access it via the Internet.
Background Information Regretfully, the old fashioned art of conversation seems to be slowly dying with the momentum of Cyberspace, Mobile Phones, Note Pads and the like. Very quickly, computer technology and all the other never ending gadgets can take over our lives, so rather than let that happen, I thought I would attempt to embrace the whole subject and use it for something constructive. Hence, the idea of creating a global cyberspace society devoted to our hobby.
With the demise of The Gosport Phillumenist Club and The Medway & North Kent Phillumenist Club (sad days indeed), a gaping hole has been left in the South of England, as the nearest venue for anyone living in the South is The British Matchbox Label & Booklet Society meetings at East Sheen, Near Mortlake, London (See Phillumeny Links for details of the BML & BS or the Clubs & Societies Pages).
As we get older, mobility plays an important role in where we go and who we visit and naturally, for the majority, the family always comes first. So irrespective of where they live, we make a conscious effort to see them even if the location or distance is problematical. However, when traveling to events that take place in differing areas of the country in respect of our hobbies - whatever they are - we again consciously have to take stock of where we can go and when.
Distance, cost, accessibility & value for time and money spent to get to and from and of course at the event itself are all important when making that decision of whether to go to an event or not.
Unfortunately, as already stated, the nearest venue for collectors living in the South of England is London, which is then followed by (in no particular order), Great Yarmouth, Stokenchurch, Winchcombe, Derby and Northwich - all of which are moving upwards towards the Midlands & North of England. Naturally, the same predicament applies in the reverse but there are more venues outside of London than in the South.
Having spoken over the years with numerous members of the different UK clubs and societies, a general consensus of opinion was that the BML & BS’s venue in London was always a problem which thankfully someone in the BML & BS took on board. Changing the venue to East Sheen was a sensible and wise move as many of the members just wouldn’t venture into the capital. By changing the venue, its made lighter work of the journey and less problematical all round. However, I still think that a South Coast Venue should be on the cards and consequently, with support from the members of the various clubs and societies here in the UK and hopefully abroad, I am hoping to be able to at least add one additional venue to our Forthcoming Events to take place in the Eastbourne Area of the County.
As most should be aware, East Sussex is well known for it’s high levels of sunshine and of course the Southeast overall is well known for it’s better than average levels of pleasant dry weather albeit, it is my intention to fill a November slot for a meeting and if successful I may with the acceptance of the other clubs and societies look to a second venue date as well.
Proposed I am proposing to schedule a live event sometime in July 2009 or/as well as November 2009 in a local church hall in a suburb of Eastbourne subject to the halls availability. Outline details are as follows:.
- The venue is approximately 200 yards from a mainline railway station which links the following places:
- Eastbourne/London
- Eastbourne/Hastings
- Eastbourne/Brighton.
- The area is also well serviced with a number of food establishments such as Cafes, Pubs, Fish & Chip Shops and Chinese Takeaways.
- Eastbourne Town Centre is approximately 3 miles distant which is one stop further by rail or a reasonably priced bus ride away (unless you have one of the newer bus passes - which makes it free). There are also numerous taxis available if you want to push the boat out?
- Even though one of the proposed dates is outside of the season, numerous hotels and guest-houses still have open doors. Details of a couple of Hotels or Guest-houses will be listed once the date has been confirmed.
The Sussex Phillumenist Society The exact details about the SPS are yet to be formulated along with the mandatory set of rules required. Initially, membership will be free but this may have to change if I go into the realms of producing a small magazine or newsletter.
Whilst the outlining principal is that access to the SPS is via the Internet, it is of course appreciated that many collectors are of the older generation and may not have direct access to the Internet.
Therefore, it is likely that somewhere down the line, I will endeavour to make the facilities available in other media such as CD or DVD.
