This web site is for collectors of matchbox labels and associated material. It has no connection with matchbox model cars or any die cast models.
The site has been designed to accommodate the latest browsers and computer systems.   However, it is fully compatible to many earlier
versions.  Ideally, a screen resolution of 1280 x 1024 or greater should be used but resolutions down to 1024 x 768 can be
accommodated but, usually with a lesser degree of sharpness and a likelihood of both vertical & horizontal scrolling.

The Phillumenist - Volume 16 - Issue 144

Whilst undated, the contents and of course the fact that it is Issue 144 would lead readers to believe that this magazine was produced around late 1951 or early 1952 as, the text inside the front cover clearly states “The only Independent Magazine published continually since 1940”. However, one has to consider that in 1940 the 2nd World War was still in it’s first year and that another five long years of fighting would have to be endured before peace would come once again.  Consequently, I have deduced that although the publication may have been continuous, there had to be extended periods between one issue and the next.  This is borne out and substantiated by the content, especially on Page 8 which refers to an article in The Reading Times (USA) of 24.10.56.

However, notwithstanding all of that, it can be clearly seen from the content that manners and respect, even in the written word was the format of the day.

I often wonder whether society has moved to far away from basic good manners?

Fortunately in this hobby of ours, many of the virtues and hopefully few of the vices are still with us.

Reading this magazine surely shows those of us who can remember this far back that the camaraderie is still with us and whilst “us anoraks” are around, the hobby will never die.

How to use the Flash Gallery above!

By default, the number of vertical thumbnail images displayed on a page in this gallery is set to 15.  Where there is more than 15 images in an album, the software automatically creates additional pages.  Access to the various images and pages is fairly straightforward and simple but there is a couple of small quirks.  Therefore, I have listed the various scenarios in the instructions below:

1.  Clicking on any of the vertical icons on the left will load that image into the main gallery.
2.  Clicking on the inside double arrows left and right will advance the screen one image left or right through the whole album.
3.  Clicking on the single arrow left or right will take you to the start or end of each page that is available in the album.
4.  Clicking on the vertical triangle [bottom centre] will start the slide show whilst clicking it again will stop it.
5.  Moving your mouse over the star [bottom centre] will highlight and identify the name of the album you are viewing.
6.  Moving your mouse over the name of the album will display the number of pages in the album.
7.  Moving your mouse over the page number and left clicking will load that album page and the thumbnails into the main gallery.

Please note that when on the default opening page of the album, the left single arrow and vertical line is not displayed.  This also applies equally to the right single arrow and vertical bar when on the last page of the album.
