The VESTA Magazine was introduced to the Phillumeny World in May 1977 and it continued to flourish for another 10 years until April 1987. Regretfully, due to a number of circumstances, not the least of which was the hospitalisation of the Managing Editor John H Luker (a stalwart to the hobby for many many years) after suffering a major stroke.
It was with much sadness that John H Luker passed away but fortunately for the hobby, his epitaph can be seen in the vast array of publications and material he produced for the benefit of everyone connected with the hobby. Strangely, did John foresee his medical problem as only the month before he produced an insert which was sent out with Issue 119 informing everyone that Issue 120 would be the last.
The loss to the phillumenic community of the magazine was only the beginning of a serious decline in the hobby, with many clubs and societies also closing their doors along with numerous match manufacturers. However, I was gratified to read in Wikipedia only the other day that when they created a page for the term Phillumeny, there were only around 10 web sites however, they now report that there are over 100! Perhaps the hobby has finally started to make a comeback ?
Displayed below is the insert that John H Luker sent out in March 1987 to all Vesta subscribers
